For businesses that want more control over updates, Microsoft offers a variety of “Windows Update for Business” options that can be configured either in Group Policy or via MDM policies. You can click “Pause updates for 7 days” again to add more time to the pause period. When you reach 35 days, the option will be grayed out—that’s the maximum. Spend any time at all on the Internet and you’ll realize that malware is a much bigger problem than Windows Update breaking computers. One is very rare — and can be fixed with System Restore or a similar recovery feature if it ever happens — while one is much more common and can result in the theft of your important data.

In our example above, if the libraries in lib/ linked against each other, they would want to define their rpath as ‘$ORIGIN’ alone. What putting the current directory into the rpath does is check the current directory of the user, when they run the program. If they are in some other directory when they invoke the binary, it will search that directory for the libraries. What we need is a way to specify paths relative to the executable itself. This will result in a file named libbumbershoot.so in my current directory, ready for linking against other programs. If you’re working with a compiled language, all you have to do is pass -fPIC as an option to gcc or clang when compiling your source files. If you’re writing assembly language code, you need to do this work by hand.

Windows 10 is a big, complicated OS that is constantly being tweaked. While some updates are small and you might not even notice them installing, others are massive and take a good chunk of time to install. The amount of time it takes can be affected by multiple factors. While updates are not the panacea for all your Windows errors, if you install regular patches for common fixes and bugs, then the number of errors you encounter can certainly be reduced. Somewhere in the back of your mind, you might have all sorts of ideas about why you, too, should have regular Windows updates. I’ve been reviewing software for PCMag since 2008, and I still get a kick out of seeing what’s new in video and photo editing software, and how operating systems change over time. I was privileged to byline the cover story of the last print issue of PC Magazine, the Windows 7 review, and I’ve witnessed every Microsoft win and misstep up to the latest Windows 11.

While there are multiple ways to upgrade to the latest version, using the Update Assistant tool is the easiest method.
